#225 Why are started journaling (And why you might want to try it too)

Why I Journal Every Morning (And Why You Might Want to Try It Too)

One of the reasons I love getting up early is so I can journal. Before my day really begins—before emails, clients, or the busyness of life—I sit down with pen and paper. This quiet time has been life-changing for me.

For years, I carried around so many ridiculous, self-deprecating stories in my head. You might call them limiting beliefs. They were really shitty. Through daily journaling, I’ve come to see that they simply aren’t true. By putting my thoughts on paper, I’ve been able to uncover my real truth, the one that lifts me up rather than drags me down. My story was that I was fat, ugly, and useless. Believing that kept me in a cycle of binge eating and victimhood.

Journaling also shifts my perspective. Instead of dwelling on what’s going wrong, I get to reflect on what’s good in my life. I make myself write three full pages—sometimes more—I usually want to stop at one page, and I’m often surprised by what comes tumbling out. There’s always something useful, something hidden beneath the surface, that I wouldn’t have uncovered otherwise.

And, for me, journaling is also a creative outlet. It gives me space to express myself freely, without judgement. Sometimes what flows onto the page is messy or unexpected, but often those raw words spark new ideas, clarity, and even joy.

Two Journals, Two Purposes

I actually keep two journals.

✨ In the first, I write just a couple of lines each day. As you’ll see in my video, I plan to continue this practice all year—capturing whatever feels significant. It could be something profound that happened in the world, something personal in my family, or even something small but meaningful, like asparagus sprouting in the garden or bananas ripening on the tree. Next year, I’ll be able to look back and see what mattered most on each day. My goal is to write a couple of lines beneath each other on the same day of each year.

✨ My second journal is where I pour out my three (or more) pages. This is a mixture of goals, reflections, and gratitude. After writing, I do my food plan for the day and update my habit tracker. I love working with 30-day goals—they keep me honest, keep me evolving, and ensure I’m moving forward rather than stagnating.

Another part of my practice is rereading older journals. I often find inspiration in the words I wrote months or even years ago. Sometimes they remind me of lessons I’ve learned, sometimes they spark new ideas, and sometimes they show me how far I’ve come.

How I Start My Day

Alongside journaling, I usually have two or three books on the go. I’ll read just a page or two from each as part of my morning routine. It feels like feeding my mind with inspiration before the day gets busy.

This combination—journaling and reading—grounds me, energises me, and sets the tone for how I show up in my life and work.

Journaling in Bali (And Beyond)

I had never really taught journaling before, but at our Bali retreat, we took an hour each morning to do just that. To my delight, almost everyone absolutely loved it—and many were surprised by the power and insight it gave them.

That experience convinced me that journaling is worth sharing more widely. So from now on, you’ll start to see journaling prompts included in my membership and mini-retreats. I believe it’s one of the most valuable tools for finding your “why” and sticking with whatever goals you’re working toward—whether it’s weight loss, exercise, or any other lifestyle habit.

A Final Thought

Journaling has taught me that my thoughts don’t define me—my choices do. By putting pen to paper, I get to choose a better story every single day. It’s a creative outlet, a way to reflect, a place to capture life’s small and big moments—and a source of inspiration when I revisit those pages later.

So, if you’ve ever wondered whether journaling is for you, I encourage you to give it a try. Just start with a few lines. You might be surprised at what truths, insights, and gratitude are waiting for you on the page.

If this resonates with you, you’ll be happy to know that journaling is something I’m weaving more deeply into my work. In our membership, I’ll be sharing monthly journaling prompts to help you discover your own insights, truths, and reasons for change. It’s such a simple but powerful tool—and I’d love for you to experience the difference it can make in your own life.
