#43 Why does my hair fall out when I diet?

I often have people come to me for help with hair loss or brittle, dry hair.
Most often it is women going through menopause, or clients who have lost a lot of weight quickly or simply women who are stressed to the max.
Do you remember how luxurious your hair was when you were pregnant? Mine changed texture and colour at my temples! And then after you had your bundle of joy, your hair started to fall out in handfulls!
Hormones definitely effect hair growth. During menopause lower female hormones and an increase in male androgens shrink our hair follicles. Hairlines may recede, and your hair becomes thinner, but thankfully this is not permanent.
Use exercise, breathwork, yoga and meditation to manage stress as best as you can.
Rapid, weightloss can cause hairloss. This condition is called Telogen Effluvium yes it is a thing. Losing weight too quickly on too few calories stops your hair from growing and increases the numbers of resting hair follicles which are shedding hair! Keep weightloss to a maximum of 500g-1kg per week to avoid this.
Nutrients for healthy hair growth include:
  • Iron, Zinc, Biotin, Selenium, Folic Acid, B6,Vitamin D3, Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Protein and Essential Fatty Acids.
Get these nutrients from:
  • Berries, Spinach, Kumara (sweet potato), Avocado, Nuts, Seeds, Capsicums, Beans & Legumes, Soya beans, Olive oil, Sesame oil, Wholegrains, Green tea.
  • If you are an omnivore Eggs, Oily Fish, Shrimp, Oysters, Lean Red Meat.

Stay well hydrated, water, water, water.

If you need help with a balanced food and exercise plan for weightloss, menopause, controlling stress, cholesterol and blood pressure, you are exactly who I am developing my monthly membership Thrive for.
