My Hip Replacement Journey: Fears, Overwhelm and Choosing Recovery | #243

In this personal episode of the Outlook for Life podcast, I’m sharing how I’m feeling in the final days before my right hip replacement.

Although I know surgery is the right decision, that doesn’t mean I’m not feeling frightened, emotional and overwhelmed. As the operation gets closer, the reality of stepping away from my usual routine, trusting the medical team and allowing my body time to recover has begun to feel very real.

I talk about my unexpected diagnosis of hip dysplasia, the impact that increasing pain has had on my active life, and why I’m choosing surgery as an investment in my future mobility, independence and quality of life.

I’m having an anterior hip replacement on Tuesday, 4 August, and I’m expecting to spend two nights in hospital. I’ll then take three weeks completely away from the gym while I begin my rehabilitation and allow my body to heal.

I also want to thank my clients, members, friends and everyone in the Outlook for Life community who has sent kind messages and good wishes. A special thank you goes to those who have already had a hip replacement and generously shared their experiences with me. Your encouragement has helped more than you may realise.

In this episode, I talk about:

  • The shock of being diagnosed with hip dysplasia
  • Why I know hip replacement surgery is the right decision
  • Feeling frightened, tearful and overwhelmed as surgery approaches
  • The challenge of temporarily stepping away from training
  • My anterior hip replacement and expected hospital stay
  • Taking three weeks completely away from the gym
  • Learning to rest, accept help and be patient
  • Why fear and bravery can exist at the same time
  • My planned recovery updates at two, four and six weeks
  • Reassurance that the Outlook for Life membership and 12-week programme will continue as normal

My recovery updates

I plan to return with an honest recovery update approximately two weeks after surgery.

I’ll then share further updates at around four weeks and six weeks, including what has been easier or harder than expected, how I’m feeling emotionally, and how I gradually begin rebuilding my movement, confidence and strength.

A message for my clients and members

Tonight’s workshop is going ahead as normal, and my surgery will not affect the Outlook for Life membership or 12-week programme.

Preparations are in place, and you will continue to receive your usual support. I may work at a slightly different pace during the early stages of recovery, but you are certainly not being abandoned.

I would love to hear from you

Have you had a hip replacement or another major joint replacement?

I would genuinely love to hear about your experience, particularly what helped you during the first few weeks of recovery.

Please feel free to contact me or send me a message. I may be a little slower to respond immediately after surgery, but I will read every message.
